The first week.

Well, I installed SuSe Linux 6.1 last saturday. I must say, installing wasn't all that difficult. First I created a boot disk. On the CD containing the Linux OS, are also a couple of disk-images. Using the program "rawrite.exe" (also on the CD, usualy in the dosutils directory) I wrote the standard IDE image to a disk. When I booted this disk, the installation began. The installation of the SuSe v6.1 OS, was completely menu driven, unlike an older version I once installed. I selected the packages I wanted to install and on it went. It's not working as I want it to right now, but it's a start.

Next was the configuring of X-windows (the GUI included with the OS). This didn't go so smooth as installing the complete OS. I knew there had to be a program somewhere to configure X, but couldn't realy find it. At last I found the program I was looking for. It was XF86Setup in the /usr/X11/bin directory (if I recall correct). I selected my video card, mouse, monitor, keyboard-type etc. At first it didn't work, but after a few attempts I finally got the message: Congratulations, you now have a working X-server. (or something like that).
But when I tried starting the X-server, it failed to start. I tried starting it using the commands: "X", "xinit", "startx", none of them worked. It kept telling me there was no valid video mode available. I talked about this to a guy at work and he said I should try configuring X using the command "sax".
So I did, it looked a lot better than the previous attempts, but still it didn't quite work. The problem this time was, that my video card wasn't listed, though using "XF86Setup" it was!! Well I tried some different configurations, but kept getting the message: Dot-clock expected or required. So I decided to remove all the configuration files which already exist and just keep the standard settings, just to try it out. And guess what, it worked!!! I just started "sax" and saved the default configuration. The only problem now is, I cannot provision a resolution larger than 640x480 pixels. For the system cannot use my video card correctly, for I do not have the right settings.
But I was glad anyway, that the X-server was running!! And I must say, it looks pretty good!!!!
